Commissioner Dervishi meets Ambassador Gonzato, data protection law an important step towards the EU

The Information and Data Protection Commissioner, Mr. Besnik Dervishi, received in an official meeting the Ambassador of the European Union in Tirana, Mr. Silvio Gonzato.

The meeting discussed the progress made by Albania in the areas of activity covered by the Information and Data Protection Commissioner’s Office, such as the right to information, the protection of personal data and open data.

Mr. Dervishi thanked Ambassador Gonzato for the unstinting support that the European Union has provided over the years and in particular for the expertise during the process of full harmonization of the new law “On the protection of personal data” with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

He emphasized that the challenge for the Commissioner’s Office remains the full implementation of the law, the need for support with professional capacities, and especially the awareness of citizens and public and private controllers with the innovations of the legislation, as well as the growth of the culture of personal data protection.

For his part, Ambassador Gonzato praised the work of the Commissioner’s Office to date, expressing his full commitment to supporting this institution in fulfilling and realizing its objectives in the future.

The meeting was also attended by Ms. Besa Velaj, Director of the Commissioner’s Cabinet, Ms. Blerta Xhako, Director of the Legal and Integration Directorate, Mr. Aleksandar Romanovic, Political Officer at the EU Delegation, and Peter Danis, Officer for Good Governance and the Rule of Law.
