The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) held its 102nd plenary meeting.
The Information and Data Protection Commissioner’s Office was represented at this forum by Commissioner Mr. Besnik Dervishi and the Director General for Personal Data Protection, Ms. Pjerina Mema.
During this meeting, the board approved the Statement on Age Assurance (AI) and decided to establish a working group for its implementation. In this document, the board outlined ten principles for processing personal data to determine an individual’s age or age range. The statement aims to ensure a consistent European approach to age assurance, with the goal of protecting minors while respecting data protection principles.
The Chair of this organization, Ms. Anu Talus, stated: “Age assurance is essential to ensure that children do not access content that is not appropriate for their age. At the same time, the method to verify age must be the least intrusive possible and the personal data of children must be protected. The principles put forward by the EDPB will help the industry to assess an individual’s age in a way that is compliant with data protection principles, while protecting children’s wellbeing”.
During the plenary session, the EDPB also adopted recommendations for the 2027 WADA World Anti-Doping Code. When personal data is processed for anti-doping purposes, it is crucial to respect and protect athletes’ personal data. The EDPB’s recommendations address key data protection principles, such as the need for a suitable legal basis for processing personal data and purpose limitation. They also emphasize that individuals must be fully informed about the processing of their personal data and be able to effectively exercise their rights.
The European Data Protection Board is the highest EU body responsible for overseeing the uniform implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This forum consists of the heads of the national Data Protection Authorities of EU member states. The Office of the Commissioner for the Right to Information and Personal Data Protection has been a member with observer status.
