The Commissioner’s Office – Roundtable with the Albanian Insurers Association: Cooperation on the Implementation of the New Law “On the Protection of Personal Data”

The Information and Data Protection Commissioner’s Office held a working roundtable with the Albanian Insurers Association and senior representatives of insurance companies, focusing on the practical implementation of the new Law No. 124/2024, “On the Protection of Personal Data.”

In his opening remarks, the Commissioner Mr. Besnik Dervishi, emphasized the role of the insurance sector as one of the main area involved in the processing of the personal data.

The Commissioner appealed to representatives of the insurance companies to consider the Commissioner’s Office as a strategic partner in this process and to take all the necessary measures to ensure the compliance with the Law. He reaffirmed that the Office would provide continuous support through training, guidance and practical instructions aimed at facilitating   compliance with the new standards.

Commissioner Dervishi further noted that, over the years, the Commissioner’s Office has monitored the methods of personal data processing within the insurance sector and has issued specific recommendations for improving information security measures and enhancing transparency towards the citizens.

The Chairman of the Assembly of Members of the Albanian Insurers Association, Mr. Xhevdet Kopani expressed, on behalf of the companies, appreciation to the Office of the Commissioner for this initiative and underlined the commitment of insurance companies to full compliance with the new legislation.

“In order to ensure the implementation of the law, the companies have already taken significant steps, including the revision of privacy policies, the updating of internal documentation and continuation of staff training programs”, stated Mr. Kopani.

During the session, Mrs. Besa Velaj, representative of the Commissioner’s Office, presented the main innovations by the new law, focusing on the revised obligations of data controllers and processors, enhanced transparency towards data subjects, and the responsibility of the Data Protection Officer (DPO).

Participants also discussed the drafting of unified sectoral documents, potentially ultimately adopting a Code of Conduct for insurance companies.

The Commissioner’s Office will continue organizing similar roundtables with other key sectors.
