The Information and Data Protection Commissioner’s Office marked the International Day for the Protection of Personal Data with a series of awareness-raising, educational and collaborative activities aimed at strengthening the culture of data protection and respecting citizens’ rights in the digital age.
In the framework of this day, the Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDPC) and the University College of Business (KUB) co-organized an open lecture with students on the importance of personal data protection.
During this activity, the Commissioner Mr. Besnik Dervishi emphasized that “personal data is our identity. They are essential for every area of life and their processing must be done with care, responsibility and in accordance with the law on the protection of personal data”. He added that the Commissioner’s Office, as a supervisory authority, has a direct role in ensuring compliance with the law in sensitive areas.
The Rector of the University College of Business, Mr. Ylber Bezo, welcomed the activity and emphasized that such collaborations with the Commissioner’s Office are very important for students, as they help them understand that the protection of personal data is essential and part of civic and professional responsibility.
The Director of the Cabinet, Ms. Besa Velaj, and the Secretary General, Ms. Blerta Nerguti, who were part of this open lecture, explained the path of the adoption of Law No. 124/2024, the need for its approximation with the standards of the European Union and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as well as the challenges of its implementation in practice.
Ms. Blerta Nergjuti focused on the role of this law in the European integration process, emphasizing that the protection of personal data is one of the basic requirements for membership in the European Union and a key indicator of the strengthening of the rule of law.
While Ms. Velaj spoke about the reasons that led to the need for the adoption of this law, emphasizing the rapid technological development, the increase in awareness of the importance of personal data and the impact of international projects in which Albania is involved.
