The Information and Data Protection Commissioner, Mr. Besnik Dervishi, participated in the fourth meeting of thematic working groups on access to information, organized within the framework of the project “Promoting Freedom of Expression in Albania through Open Dialogue”, co-financed by the EU/Council of Europe and in coordination with the Department of Journalism at the University of Tirana.
The discussions focused on the exchange of experiences, the current situation, and practical recommendations for improving access to information in our country.
Commissioner Dervishi provided a summary of the work of the Office and the performance of institutions in relation to the implementation of the law on the right to information. He brought to the attention of interest groups that the institution he leads is committed to increasing accountability and transparency of public authorities, and that Law No. 119/2014 “On the Right to Information” should be promoted by all parties, as it fulfills all conditions to be fully applicable by both public authorities and any entity requesting information.
Referring to the current situation, he emphasized that journalists’ access to public information is of particular importance; however, it must be kept in mind that the right to information is different from freedom of expression.
Access and availability of information is a fundamental component of democratic governance, transparency, and accountability.
