The regular meeting of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) addressed a number of issues of importance for further strengthening European standards in the field of personal data protection, reflecting recent developments related to international data transfers, certification and the use of new technologies.
The focus of the discussions was on the opinions on the draft decisions of the supervisory authorities of the Netherlands and Belgium, regarding the Binding Corporate Rules for data controllers of the international groups SLB and Kuwait Petroleum, important processes for ensuring international transfers in accordance with the requirements of the European data protection regulation.
An opinion was also considered on the draft decision of the Finnish authority on the accreditation of a certification body, in accordance with Article 43 of the European Data Protection Regulation, highlighting the importance of reliable certification mechanisms in increasing the level of compliance.
The meeting also addressed the Internal Work Programme for the period 2026–2027, which sets out the strategic priorities of the Board, as well as guidelines on scientific research, with a focus on legal compliance, e-government and the health sector.
Other important issues included a comparative analysis of existing inter-regulatory cooperation agreements, as well as periodic reports, including the six-monthly report of the Coordinated Supervisory Committee and the annual activity report for 2025.
Furthermore, the latest developments related to the Amazon case were discussed, as well as initiatives related to the use of artificial intelligence, including the project to create an artificial intelligence tool for supervisory authorities and its use by data protection authorities themselves.
Finally, the accreditation procedures at European level and the role of the Board in assessing certification schemes under the data protection regulation were also addressed, with the aim of approving them as the European Data Protection Seal.
The Information and Data Protection Commissioner, Besnik Dervishi, also participated in this meeting, closely following the discussions and the latest developments at European level in this field.
