As part of its mission to promote a culture of personal data protection and raise awareness among specific groups within society, the Information and Data Protection Commissioner’s Office organised an awareness-raising activity on 22 July 2026 with juveniles and administrative staff at the Juvenile Institution in Kavajë.
The activity was organised pursuant to Law No. 124/2024 “On Personal Data Protection”, which reinforces the legal framework governing the protection of personal data and places particular emphasis on safeguarding the personal data of children and juveniles. Furthermore, Part III of the Law establishes specific safeguards for the processing of personal data in the fields of criminal justice and public security.
In this context, the activity at the Juvenile Institution aimed to promote awareness of the rights that every individual enjoys regarding the protection of their personal data, while taking into account the specific circumstances of the juveniles accommodated in the institution.
The opening remarks were delivered by Ms Renata Neli, Director of the Directorate for Supervision in the Field of Criminal Justice and Public Security at the Office of the Commissioner. In her address, she underlined that the protection of personal data constitutes a fundamental right of every individual and reaffirmed the Office’s continued commitment to strengthening personal data protection standards, promoting public awareness, and fostering a culture of respect for privacy and data protection, particularly among young people.
The programme also included a presentation by Ms Desara Avdulaj, Inspector at the Office of the Commissioner, who addressed the importance of personal data protection in the digital environment, the safe and responsible use of technology and social media, and the risks associated with the disclosure and misuse of personal data online and in other contexts.
Through an interactive discussion, the participating juveniles were introduced to the rights guaranteed under the personal data protection legislation, practical measures for safeguarding their personal information, methods for recognising situations that may compromise data security, and good practices for the safe and responsible use of digital technologies.
The activity also provided participants with the opportunity to discuss practical scenarios, raise questions, and become acquainted with the awareness-raising materials prepared by the Office of the Commissioner.
As part of the programme, the Anonymous Box mechanism was presented as a confidential tool designed to enable juveniles to submit questions, concerns, or requests relating to the protection of their personal data in a secure and confidential manner.
The activity sought to provide practical and accessible guidance on the rights enjoyed by all individuals with regard to the protection of their personal data, while fostering greater awareness of privacy and data protection principles among juveniles.
The Office of the Commissioner remains firmly committed to organising awareness-raising and educational activities in cooperation with public authorities, educational institutions, and social institutions, with a view to strengthening public understanding of the right to personal data protection and promoting responsible and lawful practices in the processing of personal data.
